When should I see a cardiologist?

You may benefit from seeing a cardiologist if you have symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, dizziness or fainting, or if you have risk factors for heart disease. Your primary care provider can also refer you to a cardiologist when specialized heart care is needed.

What heart tests and diagnostic services are available at Wellstar?

Depending on your symptoms and needs, your cardiologist may recommend tests such as an EKG, echocardiogram, stress test, cardiac CT, cardiac MRI, cardiac PET scan, cardiac catheterization or nuclear cardiology testing.

Does Wellstar provide heart care for children?

Yes. Wellstar pediatric cardiologists care for babies, children and teenagers with conditions including congenital heart defects, heart rhythm disorders, cardiomyopathy and heart failure. Learn more

What is cardiac rehabilitation?

Cardiac rehabilitation is a medically supervised program designed to help people improve their cardiovascular health after certain heart conditions, procedures or surgeries. It combines exercise, education and lifestyle support to help patients safely build strength and confidence.

What should I do if I think I'm having a heart attack?

If you are experiencing symptoms of a heart attack or another life-threatening emergency, call 911 immediately. Do not wait to schedule an appointment or use online booking for emergency symptoms such as severe chest pain.

Does Wellstar offer heart care clinical trials and research studies?

Yes. Through the Wellstar Research Institute, eligible patients may have the opportunity to participate in clinical trials evaluating new treatments, procedures and technologies for heart conditions. Wellstar participates in more than 20 cardiovascular research studies in areas including structural heart disease, interventional cardiology and heart failure. Clinical trials may provide qualified patients access to emerging treatments before they are widely available. If you're interested in participating in a clinical trial, talk with your Wellstar heart care specialist to learn whether a study may be right for you.

Wellstar Kennestone Achieves Elite National Recognition in Cardiothoracic Surgery

Wellstar Kennestone Regional Medical Center has achieved a rare milestone in cardiac care, earning the highest possible rating—three stars—in four categories evaluated by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS): isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG, or open-heart surgery), aortic valve replacement (AVR), AVR + CABG, and multiprocedural cardiothoracic surgeries. This distinction places Wellstar Kennestone among the elite cardiac surgery programs in the U.S. and Canada.

The Joint Commission & American Heart Association

Wellstar Kennestone Regional Medical Center was the first in Georgia to receive the Comprehensive Cardiac Care Center certification — the premier cardiovascular award from The Joint Commission and the American Heart Association. Primary Heart Attack Centers certified by both organizations provide fast, state-of-the-art treatment to prevent and treat heart attacks at Wellstar Cobb Medical Center, Wellstar Douglas Medical Center, Wellstar Paulding Medical Center and Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center.

Our hospitals are also the recipients of many additional Get With The Guidelines awards from the American Heart Association recognizing their high level of care for people with heart attacks, heart failure, stroke and diabetes.

Emergency Cardiac Care Centers

Leaders in life-saving heart care, Wellstar has the largest network of hospitals in Georgia designated as Emergency Cardiac Care Centers (ECCC) by the Department of Public Health. When you or someone you know has a heart attack, you can trust Wellstar to provide fast and effective treatment. Our mission is to improve survival rates, reduce disability and improve quality of life from out-of-hospital cardiac arrests and heart attacks.
